I’ve always admired the different festivals in the Philippines. It’s also a dream of mine to be able to attend the famous Festivals in the country. When I was still living in the Philippines, I didn’t get the chance to visit different cities and witness their festivals. However, I ensure that I always attended my city’s very own festival – The Kadayawan Festival.
The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in our city – Davao, Philippines. Its name is derive from the friendly greeting “Madayaw”, which is also from the Dabawenyo word “dayaw”, which means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. It is held every third week of August.
This year, I got so lucky that my annual vacation fell perfectly during my grandma’s 90th birthday and the Kadayawan Festival. I got to enjoy the city and the celebration once again. The highlight of my stay during the festival was the Indak Indak sa Kadalanan. Indak-Indak sa kadalanan is actually a street dancing competition which is being participated by local elementary & schools in Davao City and neighbouring cities. With the different participants all over Mindanao, the major streets of Davao becomes alive, colourful and full of life.
Last 17th of August, me & my cousin woke up early to witness the Indak Indak sa Kadalanan. However, we got hungry thus we went to eat breakfast first in one of Davao’s local restaurants. Unfortunately, we missed some of the early performance & participants. Nevertheless, we managed to see some of the best performers. It was still a sight to behold seeing children dance on the street and enjoyed the celebration. Being there made me so happy since it has been while since I last witness that kind of event.
As someone who works abroad, I always want to make the most of my time whenever I am in my country. I want to spend time with my friends and family. I want visit the places that I used to go. I want see new attractions in the city. I want to see the people and the city. I want to be part of the community again. 😉
Just walking around the city or sitting somewhere and watching people pass by makes me really happy. I always enjoy seeing familiar faces and observe what they do. It feels really good when you are just walking then suddenly someone you know approaches you to say hi. I miss that kind of feeling. If by any chance you see me somewhere, please do not hesitate to approach me and say hi. Also, my eyesight is not that clear anymore, so if you noticed me looking at your direction and doesn’t seem to mind you, please do not think I am ignoring you. Your face may be blurry for me and thus I cannot recognise you. I just don’t like wearing eyeglasses. 😉 😛
Here’s a video I took and edited for this memorable event:
