Escaping “Phobia Dubai” a la Harry Potter

phobia-9Escape Rooms have been the recent trend to those who want challenging and mind boggling games.  According to wiki an escape room is a physical adventure game in which players solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms. Escape rooms are inspired by “escape-the-room”–style video games. Games are set in a variety of fictional locations, such as prison cells, dungeons and space stations, and usually the various puzzles and riddles themselves follow the theme of the room.

I’ve seen ads about escape rooms in Dubai but didn’t bother trying it coz I thought it was just a child’s game. Heard of it in the Philippines before, but wasn’t interested as I found it too corny.  Well, guess what? I WAS WRONG!

I got the chance to try Phobia Dubai with four of my friends and it was one of those really amazing experience.  I chose The Wizard School as our escape room since I am a Harry Potter fan and believe that in my other life – I am a wizard. lol

The Wizard School is located at JLT, X1 Tower, shop S-01.  This is walkable distance from DAMAC Properties Metro Station.  When we arrived at Phobia Dubai were greeted enthusiastically by Lee.  She was very accommodating and was always smiling.  She explained what we had to do in the escape room.  Before we entered the room she gave an introduction about our chosen room.  There were robes available for us to wear during our quest.  All of us wore the robes and felt that we were really wizards (& witches?).

The quest is simple… The Wizard School is in Danger because He who must not be named has taken over it.  To save the school, we have to solve the mysteries, puzzles and kill the Dark Lord.  Easy, right?

Sounds really easy, but it WAS NOT!  It was not a child’s game… You need to think and look for clues VERY CAREFULLY.  The room was amazing. Whoever thought of the Wizard room must have known Harry Potter by heart as it was very Hogwarts-like.  I will not give the details what we went through but it was very challenging. The good thing about the experience is that you are given HINTS.

Please DO NOT JUDGE us… We may be professionals but when you are in desperate situations and running out of time, you need all the help you could get.  Remember, even Dumbledore said “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it”.   When in need, just say – HELP and clues will be given.  😉 😛

Actually, I wasn’t too focused on our mission and quests since I got distracted by the stuff that I found inside the room.  If you were a Harry Potter fan, then you would understand me.  Seeing HP items has made the room even more exciting.   But.. you have to remember to be observant and consider everything that you see.  They might be clues!

As much as we wanted to escape without help, we were given four hints.  Please remember that this is a TEAM GAME… You all have to work together… By the way, we call ourselves Team GL.AZ.E. – a combination of the companies that we are working for.  We finished our quest and killed the Dark Lord in 50:03 minutes.

I highly recommend PHOBIA DUBAI to everyone.  This is perfect for family bonding, for company team buildings, friends get together or any other reason you could come up with just to be together.  This will test your patience and teamwork.  In the end, you’ll realise how important each of you are and how fun it is to work together and achieve your goals.
